So you have gone out and purchased a Dish Network or Direct TV satellite system. When you got home, you realized that although you have a high definition receiver, your TV isn't compatible. You have eyed those flat panel TVs in the store but don't know which one to buy?

Two of the greatest changes to the world of televisions are the plasma TV and the LCD TV. Both offer slim and sleek designs and enable unique placement, such as above a fireplace or mounting on a wall. Gone are the days of the bulky CRT (cathode ray tube) televisions or rear projection; long live the flat panel!

So how does a plasma television work?

First introduced in 1964, improvements in processing and manufacturing have made the plasma television one of the best. Differing from other television technology, such as LCD and CRT, the image is created by combining all three colors within each pixel. The signal is sent by a charge through the electrodes sandwiched between two glass panels. This changes the state of the plasma gas inside and makes the red, green and blue phosphors glow, creating light on the picture screen.

You can buy plasma televisions in either Extended Definition (ED) or High Definition (HD) resolutions. ED panels can input full HD content 1080i (interlaced) but output 500p (progressive) resolution. If you are planning to use the plasma with primarily high definition and/or with a computer, consider the HD model. If you are using it mostly with DVD, regular satellite, or cable, you will find the ED model looks great. A good ED model will outperform a poor HD plasma television, so choose a good manufacturer.

So how does a LCD television work?

The LCD television creates a picture by using a system called Twisted Nematic (TM). It is a naturally twisted crystalline structure that reacts to electric currents in predictable manners. These electric currents cause the crystal to untwist to different degrees based on the voltage given. These TM crystals are stuck between panes of polarized glass and the untwisting allows varied amounts of light to pass through.

If you are looking for a flat panel television, here are the guidelines. Below 32 inches, buy a LCD, above buy a plasma. LCD panels are available in larger sizes but the cost and quality of image will make a plasma more attractive.

Plasma televisions are better able to display fast movement without any trailing. As well, plasma televisions have a much greater contrast ratio than LCD televisions. Panasonic lists their plasma televisions at 3000:1, while the best LCD tends to be only 1000:1 contrast ratio. The plasma television has a greater angle of view and better color saturation too.

One area where the LCD television has an advantage over plasma is in screen integrity. You need to be careful with potential burn-in on plasma, but not on the LCD TV.

The LE700 series of televisions marks, in a sense, a new beginning for Sharp. While once highly regarded, in recent years, quality issues with their sets (manifested in an annoying banding problem) and generally lackluster picture quality have caused the panel manufacturer to fall out of favor with home theater enthusiasts. This set remedies all of Sharp's previous shortcomings. The quality of this set, combined with its comparatively low price, represents an extraordinary value. I'm surprised that this set isn't more popular than it is, to be quite honest. br /br /The picture quality on this TV rivals that of most plasma TVs while offering retina-searing brightness (whether you want tone it down or not is up to you). Now, for those not aware, there are two types of LED-based TVs on the market, and many companies aren't quite forthcoming in their literature about which system their televisions employ: 1) Edge-Lit LEDs, which employ LED bulbs only about the edge of the screen; there's no actual light behind the screen. These are usually marked aesthetically by being ultra-thin. They offer increased picture performance over a standard flourescent-backlit LCD but tend to have irregular uniformity and are usually brighter towards the edges. 2) Full-backlight LED. These sets are completely backlit in the manner of traditional LCDs, but replace the flourescent lamp with a full array of LED bulbs. They offer increased picture performance and much better uniformity than edge-lit models. This Sharp employs the latter method of LED lighting, and the picture trounces that of much more expensive edge-lit models offered by Samsung. The screen is completely uniform and I can't detect any un-evenness at all. Black level rivals that of a good plasma. Out of the box, the picture quality amazingly vivid and extremely unnatural. Luckily, this TV offers probably the most extensive array of available picture adjustments I've ever seen, including a six-color value, hue, and saturation adjustment. Needless to say, the possibilites with set are vast and can even be a bit overhwelming (I still find myself tinkering with them at times). Out of the box, this set also has a feature called "active contrast" engaged - I would suggest turning it off. It does make blacks deeper and color more vibrant, but blacks also tend to "crush" in this mode - in other words, thay are so black that they obscure a lot of detail within shadows. With this feature on, you may also notice an annoying fluctuation/flickering of darker areas of the picture. This set requires some fine tuning, but after that it's a real gem. Picture tends to wash out a bit at extreme angles, but that's just a symptom of being an LCD, so I won't remove any points for it. br /br /This set tends to be priced lower than other backlit offerings from Samsung, LG, and Toshiba for a couple of reasons touched upon in a previous review:br /br /1: The TV features a 120Hz refresh rate, rather than 240Hz available on most other LED-backlit sets. Sharp claims at the time of development of this product, they couldn't implement 240Hz without introducing significant artifacting. The 120Hz/240Hz debate is really at its core very silly - 120Hz is really all you need to remedy motion blur. Most people cannot discern the difference between 120 and 240 Hz anyway. It should also be noted that LG and Toshiba sets don't actually implement a true 240Hz refresh rate, but rather a 120Hz refresh rate combined with a rapidly flashing backlight. The 120Hz mode used here is extrememly efficient and separates anti-blur and de-judder modes, which is especially useful when wanting to watch films in original cadence.br /br /2: The TV lacks a local dimming feature found on other backlit LEDs. On local-dimming enabled sets, the tv can dim the LED diodes in individual zones behind the screen to achieve greater contrast and deeper blacks. The problem is, the blacks tend to get so deep that they crush and obscure shadow detail, and the number of specified LED zones is never high enough to accurately dim without leaving a nasty white "halo" around a dark image.br /br /So, in essence, this set shows Sharp actually conservatively stepping away from bleeding-edge technology and going for what works. And let me tell you, it works very well.br /br /The speakers on this set are sorely lacking - they are weak and tinny. But most flat-panel televisions suffer from this same problem, and most owners of such TVs opt for external sound. No big deal. Design-wise, the set is a masterpiece in understatedness. A rectangular glossy black frame, free from flourishes besides a tasteful silver fade and triangular blue light along the bottom (which can be switched off though the menu). When turned off, the monolithic marvel blends in extremely well with any room and exudes a sophisticated elegance. br /br /The set offers a myriad of connection options, including four HDMI. The LE700 also touts Sharp's Aquos Net feature through an ethernet connection. Aquos Net offers web content directly to your TV; I've never used this feature, so I can't quite comment on how it works, but it's there if you want to use it. The remote included with the set is oblong and hides extra buttons beneath a tiny door to keep extra clutter off the face of the remote, and some of the buttons do light up. br /br /All in all, the LE700UN offers excellent value and abundant features compared to the competition. If this series is indicative of the quality of forthcoming Sharp TVs, then I'd definitely position them back at the top of the LCD game. Highly recommended.

UPDATED JULY 2009!: After barely 6 months of use this LCD actually blew out. We were watching television and all of a sudden everything went black... completely black. Resetting, unplugging and even praying didn't work! Luckily it was still under warranty and they came in a few days ordered a new screen and had it installed within a week. The total would have been 1500 hundred out of pocket if it weren't for the warranty. INSANITY!! Honestly, after scouring the internet I have come across the same issue repeatedly where people are stuck with this paperweight. Toshiba seems to not manufacter quality products that can make it past the first 12 months. The only upside was that there was a service center 10 minutes away and everything was in-home (from the initial inspection to the actual work)... that was a plus not having to lug around the television. You will need to have a dated receipt within 12 months and they will take pictures for service.br /br /I had purchased this set back in February 2008 and wanted to review after having it for awhile.br /br /This set with DVD player was purchased for our bedroom. The picture quality is gorgeous and vibrant. We have just moved and until we get our 42 inch Panasonic on the wall we have been using this one in the living room. It more than suffices! It looks amazing, that I could see someone using this one as a main tv if the room isn't too large.br /br /Unlike other LCDs, this one does not turn dark or grayed out when viewed from different angles. The picture quality is amazing. The colors are vibrant and bright and I feel as if it is able to get a "true black".br /br /As far as the DVD player... the reality is we have used it about 2 times; so I cannot review on the dependability. I have read and experienced that Toshiba DVD players love to conk out.br /br /The frame is very sleek and sexy, just don't touch it with your oily fingers! Got this TV for a great price at Sears last year on Black Friday. Picture is good, but sound is not as other reviews have stated. Sometimes you can have the sound up all the way and have trouble hearing people speak unless the room is quiet. For better audio you will need a sound system which I have since purchased. The picture is great though and the TV works great and is easy to use. My only other issue was that if you connect a DVD or BluRay player to HDMI and you connect the Digital Audio Output to a receiver, you will only get 2 channel stereo because the HDMI ports don't support passing Dolby 5 channel surround sound. What this means is that the player's audio must go directly to the receiver. LCD Vs Plasma Vs DLP - Which HDTV is Best For You?

With so many new innovations in televisions today, it's hard to keep up with all of the popular technologies. Each of these technologies have advantages and disadvantages. It can be confusing as to what these technologies mean and if you really want or need what they have to offer. There are many people who have a wonderful understanding of all of this, but to the vast majority of us this is almost like mastering a new language. Many of us remember how easy it once was to buy a television. In the past, all you needed to consider was the size of the screen and if you could afford it. Technology has its advantages because the picture and sound quality have advanced dramatically in recent years and continues to advance, along with the addition of numerous new features. This article is the result of quite a bit of research. In this article, I have attempted to put in the most basic terms what these technologies are and how they differ from each other. It is my hope that with this information you will be able to make a better decision about which TV is best for you.

LCD, Plasma and DLP are the most popular technologies behind displaying pictures on HDTV today. Every shopper buying a TV today needs to know what these terms mean in order to make an intelligent decision about the best TV to buy.

What is LCD? LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. There is alot of technical jargon out there that explains the science behind this in very exacting and complicated terms. For the purposes of buying a TV, all you need to know is that LCD is a television display type that uses a viscous liquid and a mesh of transistors to turn pixels on and off. Direct-view and projection television both use this technology and in both, the LCDs require a light to generate brightness.

What are the advantages of LCD TVs?

(1) Low energy consumption. LCD TVs use very low amounts of power.
(2) Cooler running temperature. The light source (florescent bulb) in an LCD television generates less heat than a Plasma or traditional television.
(3) Low amounts of glare.
(4) Quality LCDs have excellent brightness level pictures and offer more contrast. Compared to Plasma TVs, LCD TVs have an increased image brightness.
(5) LCD flat panels can be mounted on walls and don't take up much room. They are typically slightly lighter than Plasma TVs.
(6) Fairly long display life. The display life of quality LCDs is approximately 60,000 hours, after which you may only have to replace the light source.

What are the disadvantages of LCD TVs?

(1) LCDs are not good for fast moving images because when objects move quickly across the screen, the image "delays" and has a tail following it on the screen when it shouldn't. There are two ways to avoid this issue. By purchasing LCDs that are 37" or smaller you will have a better image quality since the delay is less noticeable than on the larger LCD TVs. Another way is to buy a 120hz LCD, but those models are higher in price than the 60hz models.
(2) LCD reviews indicate that brightness levels aren't as good as Plasma. Although black levels have improved, they also are still not quite up to the level of Plasma.
(3) The viewing angle of an LCD is not as good as a Plasma. If you are watching an LCD from a slanted view, the quality of the image can diminish. However, this difference between LCD and Plasma is not that significant.
(4) LCD TVs over 35" are very expensive.

What is Plasma? Sometimes all flat-panel HDTVs are referred to as Plasma screens. This is a misnomer. Plasma screens have more in common with Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TVs than with LCDs. The plasma gas strikes specific pixels at the front of the TV and the pixel then turns to a specific color. Backlights are not needed with Plasma screens because the plasma varies the intensity of light which then produces a full range of colors which typically have an advantage over LCDs because they have deeper blacks.

What are the advantages of Plasma TVs?

(1) Great life span. Typically, at an average use of six hours per day, they will last about 20 years.
(2) Better viewing angles. Unlike LCDs, a Plasma screen has about 180 degrees field of vision without loss of picture quality, so you can watch from any angle.
(3) Excellent contrast ratios which enable the Plasma TVs to show better shadow detail.
(4) Faster picture response. Plasma TVs have an excellent picture response. There is virtually no delay like LCDs.
(5) Like LCDs, Plasma TVs don't take up too much space and can be mounted on a wall.

What are the disadvantages of Plasma TVs?

(1) Image burn-in. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to image burn-in of static images. If you were to leave the Plasma TV on for many hours, the network logo on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen would be burnt-in.
(2) Plasma TVs are not available under 37".
(3) Shorter display lifespan than other types of TVs like LCDs. Simply by turning the brightness down, you can extend the display lifespan of the Plasma TV.
(4) Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs.

What is DLP? DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. DLP is a method using rear projection light which has taken the place of the old Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology. Unlike CRT, DLPs are relatively thin. Like LCD, a chip is used for the actual image to be displayed on, however, the chip used in a DLP TV is different. The chip is referred to as a DMD (Digital Micromirror Device). If you're not confused already, to simplify this, every pixel on a DMD chip is a reflective mirror.

What are the advantages of DLP TVs?

(1) DLP TVs are cheaper than LCDs or Plasma TVs.
(2) DLP TVs have a good variety of sets in very large sizes.
(3) Excellent brightness and color.

What are the disadvantages of DLP TVs?

(1) High maintenance cost. With DLP TVs you have to replace the projection bulb which has a limited durability. Not only can these be expensive, but they can also be hard to find.
(2) Not wall mountable. DLP TVs take up more space than LCD TVs and Plasma TVs.
(3) Poor field of vision. As with LCDs, when viewed on an angle the picture quality suffers.
(4) Poor picture quality. The picture quality does not compare to LCD TVs and Plasma TVs.
(5) Image blur. With DLP TVs scenes of fast action can cause a trail of colors.

Ultimately, what TV you decide to buy depends upon what your needs are and your personal situation. Only you can decide what is best for you and your household, but it is always best to be informed regarding what your options are.

How Long Will My Flat Panel TV Live?

A decent amount of people worldwide have taken up possession of flat panel televisions. One would almost think it was a newborn baby in these people's possession with the care and attention these televisions receive over time. Perhaps that's because a plasma or LCD television can, indeed, set one back a few thousand dollars.

Other than the intense difference in your home theater quality, in some circles, one of these TV gems represents a kind of status symbol. With that kind of financial investment this would warrant a special kind of maintenance and care. Like with anything you take care of, it should give you a quality performance for years to come. So, let's take a look at the length of time one receives such performance from their flat panel TV. In order to do this, we will be dissecting each type of high performance television.

Flat Panel Televisions:

Originally the word "lifespan" was used to prose this topic but that was wrong in a sense. A television is measured as a "Half-Life", the time before the television's screen dims from one half of the original brightness. Every television from Flat panels to CRTs loose brightness over time and this cannot be helped.

Should you, as a prospective buyer or owner, worry about the lifespan of your television? Not really, but some people do commonly fear their extravagant televisions will burn out long before the classic yet reliable picture tube sets of yesteryear.

Consumer Reports, an independent nonprofit organization, published a report last year, which explains flat panel sets are just as reliable as CRT TVs in their first year. Most won't be fearful about long-term reliability because they would more than likely be looking for a new TV long before their flat panel fades to black.

The LCD Screen:

The winner in the debate between longevity of LCD and plasma televisions is the LCD. The LCD panel alone holds a virtually limitless lifespan because of this the screen's LCD light source.

The light bulb of a the LCD is what produces pictures, and just as with any other light bulb, the light will dim over a period of time after repeated use. Hence both the bulb and the LCD screen life are equivalent to one another, the proposed life span ranges from 30,000 to 60,000 hours. Some manufacturers estimate a larger sum of 80,000 hours. Replacing these bulbs will easily increase your television's lifespan. Watching an average of about six hours a day will give you just about 28 years before the LCD's brightness begins to dim to half it's original level.

The Plasma Television:

Plasma is somewhat inferior to it's LCD counterpart in the case of a lifespan. The common mistake is that a plasma television will last almost 10 years, this as stated already, is not true.

Plasma televisions use gases where the LCD uses bulbs for lighting. Like anything else, plasma gases will decay overtime. This process is a slow and gradual one with ranges from 20,000 to 30,000 hours along with the manufacturer estimation of 60.000. All of these estimates are figured under optimal conditions. Currently there is no form of replacement for plasma gases. This makes the average six hour a day of television equate to 14 years before the plasma's brightness begins to fade to one half of the original level of brightness.

To put these life spans in terms of relative experience - the cathode ray tube or CRT televisions, which we have been most accustomed to, have one of the longest life spans of up to more than 80,000 hours.

A Few Tips:

Some tips to extending or securing the longevity of your flat panel television: -Always adjust the Contrast and Brightness levels. A flat panel is preset for conditions of a showroom and may need to be set to a level for your living room or where ever you have decided to place it.

-Know your brand of televisions. Not all flat panels are made the same. Research on the net and word on the street; look for a brand that has been around more than others. See our articles on selecting a flat panel TV.

-When not in use, shut it down. Pull the plug from the outlet even. Standby mode is still a strain. This kind of care will not only help your television but your power bill as well.

-For the plasma sets that are in idle mode, never leave static images on for long. The gases make the plasma sets susceptible to burn. Few things are more aggravating than seeing a phantom image of the logo for your favorite show burned forever into the screen of your plasma.

-Keep the television set in cool, well-ventilated areas. This eases the heavy work of the inner system of the television.

-Never mount your television above your fireplace. For the same reasons as stated above however if you feel you must do so, first test the heat of the air above with your hand. If this area feels hotter than the rest of the room choose another location.

Why does the Xbox 360 Flash 3 times at you?

The console does this mostly because it overheats, it overheats because too much heat is being released in too small and area, this area is near the CPU and GPU which are essential to the Xbox 360 running. It ca be due to other reasons, but this is the main reason.

How to prevent it
Heres some of the thing's I do to prevent this from happening:

• Make sure your Xbox 360 is on it's side, is you put it vertically, it covers one of the 360's main vents at the bottom, this will result in a lot more heat, what I like to do is put it on two piles of video tapes so the side that's facing the floor is not covered by the floor.


• Make sure your Xbox 360 has enough free space, make sure your Xbox is not in a case beneath your DVD player or anything, the best place for it is on the floor with two piles of video tapes under it. And make sure it's out of direct sunlight. This will make the chance of overheating minimal.


• Make sure your game CD's are clean, dusty and dirty CDs can create friction between the Xbox 360 and the game causing disk read errors and maybe a problem with the disk tray laser. Make sure your game CD is free of dust and dirt.


• Switch off your Xbox 360 via dashboard, rather than using the button on your Xbox hold the Guide button on you controller until it gives you the option of switching it off, then switch it off, then make sure it's fully switched off. Switching it off via the button can make the hard drive put too much effort into switching off. Also never switch off the Xbox 360 using the mains, doing so will make your Xbox 360 flash the red rings of death, if this happens switch it off and switch it back on, it may be OK or you may have the red rings of death permanently

Q: Will leaving my LCD TV on cause the image to degrade?

LCD TV - The Latest In Viewing

Liquid Crystal Display is all about flat panel television technology. The technology of liquid crystal display has penetrated our everyday life in everyday things like wristwatches, mobile phones, calculators, computer monitors and high definition television. The use is growing rapidly and sales of LCD TV are expected to exceed 4 million in America alone.

There are some distinct advantages of LCD panels over other kinds of display technologies. They are slimmer and hardly go beyond 3.5`` in depth. These are lighter also and best of all they draw less power - only about 60% of the power consumed by plasma displays. These televisions do not spew electromagnetic waves that are harmful.

There are drawbacks of course - viewing angle is restricted, contrast ratio is limited and time of display response may cause concern. The biggest frown of all is caused by the price. Although it is falling but still it is considerably higher than its plasma counterpart.

LCD displays comprises mainly of sheets of polarized glass sheets - two in number. A liquid crystal solution is sandwiched between these. These liquid crystals are very specific that causes them to act as shutters that open or shut out entry of light as the need arises depending upon flow of electric current. This current passing through the liquid crystals is regulated by voltage that is applied between the glass sheets through the electrodes that are transparent. These form a network having rows on one direction of the panel and columns on the other side representing the pixels or picture elements.

What are these liquid crystals? Matter can be found in three states - solid, liquid and gas. Nevertheless there are substances that exist in a state that is neither liquid nor solid at any one point of time. The behaviour of these molecules is also peculiar. They keep to their orientation like those in a solid and yet they shuffle around taking up various positions like the molecules of a liquid. Thus these liquid crystals can be termed neither solid nor liquid though they have more of an affinity for the latter - that is the liquid state.

There are various types of liquid crystals with each having its distinct properties. Those used in LCD panels are termed nematic-phase liquid crystals. The molecules are arranged in a particular fashion having distinctive pattern.

LCD display systems are of two types - passive and active matrix. The former is more complicated, produces the best pictures and consequently the price also goes up. During the manufacturing stage bad-pixels pose a serious problem. Innumerable controlling transistors are required on the glass substrata to control each sub-pixel. A typical wide screen panel will require 3.1 million transistors. Any one faulty transistor cannot be replaced and are known as dead or stuck pixels. If one is permanently off then a black spot will show and if it is on then a white spot will show. If it crosses a certain number the whole unit will have to be discarded.

It was during the early 2000`s that LCD flat panels took over the television market from the typical CRT`s. The basis of the technology is founded on the characteristics of polarized light. The thin semi liquid crystal gel trapped between two slim polarized sheets is divided into pixels.

There is hectic activity to overcome the technological difficulties to make the set affordable. So the LCD TV has to be made affordable to hit the headlines of success.

I have had this portable DVD player (Mintek 1810) since 2003. That's right, 2003--for almost seven years. Although I took it with me on airplanes in the first few years, I have never owned a "real" home DVD player, because the Mintek is all I need. I hook it up to the various Tvs I've owned over the years and it functions as my 365-days-a-year DVD player. br /br /NEGATIVESbr /br /There is only one major negative with the Mintek 1810, and that is that the *only* way to control the DVD is to use the remote control. That is, the only buttons or controls on the actual unit itself are a Menu button, a chapter ( and ) skipping button, and the usual Play, Pause, and Stop. If you want to fast forward or rewind; change the screen format; or do any other more refined actions, you are forced to use the remote control. The remote is a good one (see below), but if you've lost it, if the battery is run out, or if it has broken, you are left with no way to refine your watching of a DVD. br /br /POSITIVESbr /br /1. Durability! Have I ever put this thing through its paces: I've lugged it through several moves; carted it around in boxes and cars and airplanes; had to open it up and dump it in an airport security bin 20-30 times; and it has even fallen off my (low) table a few times.br /br /I too was skeptical when I first bought it, worrying that this off-brand would be a waste of money. But I didn't have a lot of money to spend at the time, and did not have a laptop computer; my long and frequent airplane rides needed a modest enterntainment upgrade, and the Mintek appeared to provide it for less money than the big name brands.br /br /2. Sound Quality. This baby has better sound quality and volume control in its tiny--and powerful--speakers than my 00 LCD (brand name) flatscreen TV. When this is placed on a knee-high table and turned to a even a medium-low volume, you can hear it across an average sized room. FYI, when it's hooked up to your TV, it's best to turn down the volume of the unit completely, so you can concentrate on the sound coming through the TV.br /br /3. Decent color and picture quality; nice big screen for something so portable. br /br /NEUTRALSbr /br /The reason I am reviewing this now is because over the past few months, the mini-remote control that comes with the player has started winding down. I'm not sure exactly why, but for some reason, the battery does not hold a charge for longer than a few days now. Perhaps this is because I really abuse the remote; it falls on the ground, gets tossed about inbetween uses, and otherwise takes a beating. Because of my shoddy treatment of this remote over seven years, I'm pretty impressed with the fact that it's only now starting to run into problems. br /br /I'm now looking to find a replacement for this remote--however, if it's too expensive, I'll just buy a new Mintek. br /br /SUMMARYbr /br /I won't promise that Mintek or any other off-brand will give you the same length of years, durability, and performance as mine has. Other reviewers here have clearly had their problems with the product, and I respect their contributions. But, based on my personal experience, getting an electronic of ANY sort is a gamble--I have had a Magnavox TV-VCR combo, Sony flatscreen TV, and RCA mini flash camcorder all permanently fail within a year, a few months, and a few days, respectively. And one of these companies provided such atrocious customer service that it belied the conventional wisdom that "brand name electronics companies will stand by their product and have better repair or return than non-name brand companies."br /br /If you do not have a lot of money to spend on DVD entertainment, I say you might as well give Mintek a shot. Personally, I've been so impressed with this product, that I would buy a different product from this company in the future.
